This is my genre, tell me yours – book tag

I wasn’t tagged, but I came across this tag via Britt @ Geronimo Reads! She posts about a variety of genres, which I really appreciate.

 

What’s your favorite genre?

These days, it’s a really close tie between historical fiction and suspense. I guess I’m going to have to go with historical fiction.

 

Who’s your favorite author from that genre?

I honestly can’t pick just one. Kathleen Grissom is marvelous with “The Kitchen House” and its sequel, “Glory Over Everything.”

I’ve only read one of her novels so far – “Early One Morning” – but Virginia Baily is excellent as well.

 

What is it about the genre that keeps pulling you back?

There are a plethora of great authors out there who are bringing to life time periods that I would love to step into if I had a time machine – the Roaring Twenties, the Civil War era, etc. Historical fiction is the next best thing to time travel, as far as I’m concerned – so long as it’s well researched, of course!

 

What’s the book that started your love for the genre?

It’s hard to say for sure, but I’m going with “Rules of Civility” by Amor Towles.

If you had to recommend at least one book from your favorite genre to a non-reader/someone looking to start reading that genre, what book would you choose and why?

I cannot overemphasize how much I enjoyed “The Chilbury Ladies’ Choir” by Jennifer Ryan. It is a delight to read, told through letters and journal entries. It has humor, drama, romance, intrigue, character growth … want me to go on?

Why do you read?

That’s like asking, “Why do you breathe?”

Reading is my therapy, my escape. It takes me to places I’ve never been, introduces me to strange and wonderful people, shows me things I never knew. Finishing a really good book is like saying goodbye to a  dear friend, and picking up a new book is like meeting another one.
