Since I’m new to this scene, I’m actively seeking ways to connect with the book blogger community. This morning I stumbled across a weekly challenge, #FridayBookShare, created by Shelley Wilson.
For my first #FridayBookShare, I’d like to draw your attention to “Closed Casket” by Sophie Hannah, the second installment in the New Hercule Poirot series (inspired by Agatha Christie’s Belgian detective and his “little grey cells.”)
First line of the book
“Michael Gathercole stared at the closed door in front of him and tried to persuade himself that now was the moment to knock, as the aged grandfather clock in the hall downstairs stuttered its announcement of the hour.”
Recruit fans by adding the book blurb
“‘What I intend to say to you will come as a shock…’
“With these words, Lady Athelinda Playford – one of the world’s most beloved children’s authors – springs a surprise on the lawyer entrusted with her will. As guests arrive for a party at her Irish mansion, Lady Playford has decided to cut off her two children without a penny … and leave her vast fortune to someone else: an invalid who has only weeks to live.
“Among Lady Playford’s visitors are two strangers: the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, and Inspector Edward Catchpool of Scotland Yard. Neither knows why he has been invited – until Poirot begins to wonder if Lady Playford expects a murder. But why does she seem so determined to provoke a killer? And why – when the crime is committed despite Poirot’s best efforts to stop it – does the identity of the victim make no sense at all?”
Introduce the main character in three words
The main character, whom I believe was underdeveloped, is Lady Playford – a wealthy, aging author.
Delightful design
Audience appeal
“Closed Casket” will strike a chord with mystery fans who are hungry for more Agatha Christie-style who-dun-its.
Your favorite line or scene
Lady Playford’s announcement that she is leaving her entire estate to her terminally-ill secretary, Joseph Scotcher, shocks everyone – not least of all this reader.
Great choice! Thank you so much for joining in with the Friday Book Share game x

Nice challenge! 🙂 I love the cover for this book, it’s so mysterious and the colors are great. I might take a look at it once I have read a few of Christie’s books in English!
